After serving a 22 game suspension, Jon Merrill has returned and since then the Wolverines are 4-1-1. The future New Jersey Devil did a lot of soul searching during his time away. If he wanted to, he could have left Ann Arbor for the OHL and played with the Plymouth Whalers. Instead, he worked his way back into Red Berenson’s good graces and earned his way back on to the ice. On the decision, Merrill said "I love my teammates and the University of Michigan, the coaching staff. I love everything about it. There was just a huge part of me that told me it was the right thing to do to stay. I stuck with it and I’m happy I made that decision."
Merrill also spoke with Dave Starman during the 2012 World Junior Championship and had the following to say about what he learned about himself during his suspension:

By Sean, on January 25th, 2012 Things are winding down for the 2012 recruiting class. With only a few days left until national signing day, here is were Michigan s tands with it’s handful of remaining recruits (in no particular order).
1. Josh Garnett – Officially down to Michigan, Notre Dame and Stanford, but the consensus is that Michigan and Stanford are his final two. Most insiders have had Garnett penciled to Stanford for quite a while, but the Wolverines have made a big, big push in the past few months. Coach Hoke was in-home with Garnett this past Sunday and Josh plans a 3PM PST decision at his high school on Thursday. Michigan’s Chances? 51%
2. Jordan Diamond – Down to Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan and Wisconsin. Seemed to fall off the radar after spring, but things have picked up quite a bit over the past few months. Visited Michigan numerous times over the past year, including his January official. He seemed enamored on each of his visits, but stuck to his plan of taking his decision all the way down to the wire. Michigan’s in-home is on Tuesday. Jordan plans a post LOI Day decision at his high school on 2/3/12. Michigan’s Chances? 60%
3. Armani Reeves – Down to Michigan and Ohio. Like Diamond, Reeves fell off the UM radar earlier in the year after Anthony Standifer and Terry Richardson both committed. Things heated up again after the decommittment of Standifer and the Penn State scandal. Will Reeves follow his good friend Cam Williams to Ohio? Or will his great relationship with the Michigan coaching staff take him to A2? Coach Hoke had his in-home on Sunday and Greg Mattison is there tonight. He’ll decide sometime soon after the in-homes. Michigan’s chances? 51%

It was Livestock Week for the (#19) University of Michigan men’s basketball team last week. They played the “cows” (Michigan State) and the “hogs” (Arkansas), and they won one and lost one. On Tuesday (01/17/2012) they beat (#9) MSU 60-59 in Crisler Arena, thenon Saturday (01/21/2012) they lost at Arkansas 66-64. This brings Michigan’s record to 15-5 (5-2 in the Big Ten).
Both games were exciting, and both games came down to the visiting team taking the last shot with a chance to win the game. In both games, the last-ditch shots failed. In the MSU game, our old buddy Draymond Green missed a runner with about 2 seconds left, and his follow-up tip-in attempt also missed, even though it wouldn’t have counted anyway, since the horn had already sounded. In the Arkansas game, Trey Burke got off a good 3-point attempt at the buzzer, and it rimmed out.
UM played a very good game vs. the Farmers Spartans, getting ahead early and keeping a comfortable lead for most of the game. After leading by 7 points (36-29) at halftime, Michigan pushed the lead up as high as 11 points (47-36) with about 12 minutes left in the game. Everyone knew that MSU would have a run at some point in the game, and this was the point. State went on a 16-2 run, and led 52-49 with 5:47 left to play. The rest of the game was very tense, with UM recapturing the lead with 37 seconds left, and MSU holding for the last shot, which didn’t go in. When the final horn sounded, the place exploded, and a certain usher in the upper bowl might have behaved less than professionally.
Oh yeah, in case you haven’t heard, Michigan has beaten MSU 3 times in a row now in basketball.
The good news here is that Michigan won a big rivalry game, and looked good doing it. They are also tied for 1st place in the Big Ten. The bad news is that UM has had one of the easiest Big Ten schedules so far, and they play most of their remaining games on the road, or against the other contenders, or both.
The Arkansas game was the exact opposite of the MSU game: Michigan got down early, fell way behind, and spent the whole game playing “catch-up”. Arkansas started the game as hot as any team I have ever seen. They hit their first 11 shots, including a few 3-pointers, and built up a 20-point lead midway through the 1st half. Michigan never gave up, and they managed to close the gap to “only” 13 points at halftime (46-33). They kept scrapping and clawing, and got within 2 points a few times in the closing minutes of the game, including the final 7.6 seconds. Burke got open, took the shot, and … oh well.

By Josh Hagerman, on January 10th, 2012 As 2011 comes to a close, 2012 brings many new opportunies from everyone across the nation. No more is that apparent than for Eleonore rocks, as I mentioned yesterday in my article about our amazing alum, Andy Potts. In fact, 2012 is looking to be not only a great racing season for the team, but the expansion of the team has started to take a global approach already in it’s short time. Our plans for this year are not only to continue to effectively spread the word about the foundation, raise money for the terminally ill children and their families, but offer our fans and supporters a more intimate experience as well with all of our athlete’s being more active with posting pictures, chatting with our community, and even working together to find more families and places to donate.

By Josh Hagerman, on January 9th, 2012 Many individuals have made their way into the triathlon world to have fun, reach goals, or even compete. Moreover, in some cases we have those few individuals who want to make a difference that are driven not only from their success, but also from their experience from people that are very close and dear to them. This was the case for University of Michigan alum, Andy Potts.
