#1 Michigan vs. #13 Simon Fraser Lax Preview

by Josh Hagerman 9. March 2010 23:34

SFgame.png

The #1 ranked Wolverines will take on #13 Simon Fraser from the comfort of their home at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse, in Ann Arbor. Michigan is currently on a 43 game win streak, and are finally playing at home after their 3-game road trip. The Wolverines beat, on their road trip, three top 15 teams. Michigan, however, did not play as well as they would have liked. They made quite a few mental mistakes, and committed more turnovers than they were used to. I am confident their coach, John Paul, has used the time between contests to address these issues.

Simon Fraser is coming into the game struggling, and have lost their last two games in a row. They seem to be disoriented on defense, and do not have great leadership throughout. Michigan is a very dynamic team, and will be hard to deal with if Simon Fraser does not address their issues as well. The Wolverines have a very high powered offense, and great goaltending. Michigan's last game showed just how dynamic and motivated they are when they overcame an early deficit to dominate the 2nd and 4th periods to ensure their 43rd straight win. More...

Wolverines Basketball Falls To Michigan State

by Josh Hagerman 7. March 2010 18:53

0910-UMHoopsPennSt 2.jpg

The Wolverines traveled to the Jack Breslin Student Events Center, East Lansing, MI to take on the Michigan State Spartans. Michigan played really well in their last game, and it seemed as if they would come into this game highly motivated to make a statement in their last game this season. However, their offense was horrible in the first half, only netting 14 total points in the entire first half. They had way too many turnovers, and were playing in a very lazy fashion.

The second half didn't start off much better, however, the Wolverines were able to score more than double the points in the 2nd half than they did in the first half. Their defense played a little better in the second half, but they just couldn't stop the Spartans from getting to the rim. The Wolverines have often had problems throughout the season pertaining to their lack of defense, and this game showed just how ready they were to be done with this season.

The Wolverines had 19 turnovers, and shot a dismal 22 percent in the first half. Overall, Michigan shot about 35 percent to end the game. The Wolverines struggled greatly from the 3-point line, and never got into any rhythm. Michigan, all season long, has needed a third scorer to step up, but no one ever did. Manny and DeShawn were the main scorers this year, and they had to take on the bulk of the load the entire season. Next year looks somewhat promising, but we will have to see if Beilein can bring in anyone to be a productive player on the team. He needs to add some depth to the bench if he believes they will ever compete with the better teams in the NCAA. Next season should be better, but only time will tell. I just wanted to thank the Wolverines for not giving up in games like this. It shows they are motivated even in times when they know things will never go their way.

GO BLUE.

Post-Game Breakdown Of The Michigan/BYU Lax Match

by Josh Hagerman 7. March 2010 12:55

9196424_420x300_mb_art_R0.jpg

Michigan started the game slowly, making many mental errors which contributed to scores for BYU. The Wolverines eventually gathered themselves to mount a comeback, and took the lead mid-way through the second period. Thomas Paras, and Trevor Yealy led the Wolverines in goals with 4. Thomas Paras had the most complete game adding 3 vital assists. Reinhard and Paras dominated on groundballs, which lead to a few scores for the #1 Wolverines. Reinhard ruled the face-off realm once again, just as he has all season long.

Michigan ruled the statistics once again taking 37 shots to BYU's 34. The Wolverines picked up groundballs like they were money last night, and overpowered the groundballs 67 to the Cougar's 39. Michigan, with the help of Reinhard, ruled the center of the field winning 17 of 25 face-offs. For the second game in a row, the Wolverines had one too many turnovers, and contributed some of them to BYU's high pressure defense. Michigan could have scored many more goals, but turnovers were a killer. The Wolverines finished a strong 24 of 30 on clears, while pressuring BYU into only 13 of 21.

The #1 team in the nation, Michigan, will finally end the road trip beating 3 top 15 teams. They will kick off their home schedule when they take on #3 Simon Fraser on Friday March, 12. The game will start at 7:00 pm Eastern Time in Ann Arbor at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.

#1 Michigan Men's Lacrosse Wins Big Over #5 BYU

by Josh Hagerman 6. March 2010 23:19

LaxFinalBYU.png

The University of Michigan Lacrosse team headed to Provo, Utah to take on #5 BYU. The Wolverines were looking to extend their winning streak, and beat their third straight ranked opponent. Michigan looked poised during their pre-game workouts, and seemed very motivated to start the game. (picture below taken during warm ups)

Mark Stone started in goal for the Wolverines, and Will Hilton was defending for BYU. The opening face-off was won by the dominant specialist, David Reinhard. The groundball was picked up by Michigan, and they started their attack. The Wolverines had a short possession, and a shot was taken by Anthony Hrusovsky at the top of the circle only to be saved by Hilton. The Wolverines caused a groundball right away and was picked up by Alex Vasileff. Trevor Yealy received the ball and shot a rocket just wide of the goal. Michigan seemed to be poised to score right away.

#1 Michigan Vs #5 BYU Lax Preview

by Josh Hagerman 5. March 2010 11:30

BYUgame.png

The University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team will travel to Utah to take on #5 BYU this Saturday. The Wolverines just beat a very talented team, Arizona State, to show just how dominant they are. U of M made quite a few turnovers in their last game, and contributed their poor gameplay to a lack of execution.

BYU is a talented team as well, however, they don't have the depth Michigan does. I can see the game being very competitive, and it possibly being a high scoring affair. I am confident coach John Paul has corrected the mistakes the Wolverines made in their last game, and I do not foresee them making as many in this game. Elliot Grow will be leading BYU with his 3.5 points per game, and I am sure Andrew Harding will be contributing quite a bit as well.

Hrusovsky, Yealy, Paras, and Reinhard will all lead the charge tomorrow. Reinhard is a face-off master, and I anticipate him dominating again. Reinhard is a key element because he allows Michigan to have many more possessions, and creates many more scoring chances. I can see the game being close to start the game, but the Wolverines will dominate the second half. They have, so far this season, dominated second half's to ensure wins in each of their last two games. I have quite a bit of respect for BYU as a team, however I see the Wolverines winning 15-9. GO BLUE.

Breakdown Of The U of M and ASU Lax Match

by Josh Hagerman 4. March 2010 13:11

LaxHelmet.png

Michigan extended their winning streak to 42 games after their win last night over #3 Arizona State. The Wolverines had many turnovers, and it contributed to the close game. The coach, John Paul, had quite a bit to say on their performance. According to the Wolverines official page, John Paul had this to say:

On his general impressions: “I’m proud of the guys for gutting that out versus a very good ASU team, but we didn’t help ourselves out with the way we were turning the ball over or the way we were playing in general. Some days you have it and some days you don’t and we were never able to correct the mistakes we were making but we got it done and ultimately I’m proud of the guys for a getting a win on the road against a great team.”

On the cause of the sloppy play: “It was partly execution mistakes with the 39 turnovers and a lot of those were unforced and we can’t play that way. Some of it was also focus mistakes. We were doing a poor job of locating our shots and our shot selection was bad. Those don’t show up as turnovers on the stat sheet but they’re essentially turnovers if they’re hitting him in the chest or if we’re shooting from somewhere where we told them not to.”

Michigan Lax Plays Hard To Beat #3 Arizona State

by Josh Hagerman 3. March 2010 23:14
LaxFinalASU.png

The Wolverines started off the match by winning the first face-off, and on their second possession they scored to make it 1-0. Clark Mcintyre scored the goal, and was assisted by Hrusovsky at 11:40 in the 1st period. Michigan made short work by scoring again at the 11:03 mark in the 1st period. Thomas Paras had worked around the crease and nailed the shot.

Arizona State tied the score up at 2-2, but Yealy and Freid broke up the Sun Devils clearing chance to cause a ground ball into the goal to make it 3-2 Michigan with :47 seconds left in the first period. The period ended with great defense on both sides. The key for Michigan was to limit mental errors, and to cause more turnovers.

Michigan scored at 12:40 of the second period to increase their lead to 5-3, but the Sun Devils scored 4 minutes later to narrow the margin to 1 goal. Arizona State had many long possessions, and worked quite a bit of time off the clock. Michigan scored to make it 4-6 shortly before the half. Reinhard was a beast all night on face-offs, and it contributed to Michigan being ahead so far. Arizona State ended the half with a near make at the buzzer, however, the score at the half was 6-5 Michigan.

Preview of the Arizona State and Michigan Lax Game

by Josh Hagerman 3. March 2010 14:14

9183822_420x300_mb_art_R0.jpg

The #1 ranked Wolverines will be taking on the #3 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils tonight at 7pm. The two teams match up very well both offensively and defensively. The Wolverines have quite a bit more depth, but the Sun Devils have Ryan Westfall and Tyler Westfall. The two brothers have quite a bit of experience, and have been scoring machines so far this season for the Sun Devils. The Wolverines will also have to deal with Eric Nelson, who is second in the nation averaging 7 points per game.

Michigan has their powerhouse attackman Trevor Yealy to take on the Sun Devils defense. Yealy scorched the Arizona Laxcats with 6 goals in his last contest on February 27. Thomas Paras is another strong attackman for the Wolverines, and netted 3 goals against the Arizona Laxcats. Both attackman are very strong, and the Sun Devils will have their hands full with both of them. Andrew Fowler looked nervous against Arizona, but he improved his efforts in the 2nd half to ensure Michigan won. Fowler is a very strong goalie, and ASU will need to push hard if they think they will score. Westfall and Khan are good goalies for ASU, but they have yet to face a team as dynamic as the Wolverines.

The Wolverines are #1 for a reason. GO BLUE.

Michigan Wins Big Against The Gophers

by Josh Hagerman 2. March 2010 23:57

0910-UMHoopsPennSt 11.jpg

Michigan came into the game shooting horribly over their past few contests. However, tonight was another story. The Wolverines looked great after they got into a rhythm. The Wolverines started out slowly, but picked it up quite a bit 7 minutes into the game. They were passing the ball well, defending well, and even hitting from the 3-point line.

The Wolverines led 43-29 at halftime. They started right where the left off to start the second half, and the game looked as if it was going to get out of hand. The team looked strong, and the chemistry was tremendous throughout the entire game. The Wolverines looked as if they were have quite a bit of fun for once, and the final score showed it. The Wolverines buried the Gophers 83-58. It was their most convincing win in quite some time.

DeShawn Sims led Michigan with 23 solid points in 30 minutes, and Manny Harris chipped in 22 points in 35 minutes. Harris was great on defense netting 3 steals, and was 8-12 from the field. The Wolverines played very well tonight, and I know it's going to carry over to the Michigan State game to end the season. They may not be playing for entry into the post-season, but they sure played like they were tonight. LETS GO BLUE!

Wolverines Lacrosse Victorious In Opener

by Josh Hagerman 1. March 2010 22:31

LaxFinal.png

The Wolverines Lacrosse team had their season opener in Tucson this past weekend against the #23 ranked Arizona Laxcats. The game was poised to be a great one, and it did not disappoint. The Wolverines are ranked #1 in the nation according to MCLA The Lax Mag, and #5 according to Laxpower. The Wolverines have won the past two MCLA National Championships, and are heavy favorites to win it all again this year.

The Wolverines struggled to find their rhythm to start the game, however, they soon regained their dominant gameplay in the second half. Arizona was playing very tough to start the game, and it seemed they knew what the Wolverines were going to do on every possession. It wasn't until the second half when the Wolverines finally regained composure, and they outscored the Laxcats 10-2 in the final 30 minutes to ensure their victory. The Wolverines won the contest by a convincing margin 15-5.

Michigan outshot Arizona 46-29, and won 15 of the 24 face-offs. The Wolverines will be playing again on March 3rd when they take on #3 Arizona State

GO BLUE LAX!

Michigan Falls To Ohio State

by Josh Hagerman 1. March 2010 00:11

0910-UMHoopsPennSt 29.jpg

Ohio State started the game strong yesterday, and didn't have many problems shooting the ball. The Wolverines were trying to find an answer to prevent the Buckeyes from running away with the game for the first few minutes. Towards the middle of the 1st half, the Wolverines looked like they were trying to get into a groove even though their shooting woes still continued.

By the end of the half, the Wolverines were ahead. They finished pretty strong, and it looked like they were going to carry the momentum into the 2nd half. The start of the second half showed the Buckeyes came to play. They pulled away and never looked back. It seemed like Michigan was trying to find an answer, and they seemed to be taking shots they didn't need at the moment. The Wolverines just couldn't pull together, and had another poor shooting night.

The Wolverines shot 36 percent, but shot very well from the line. I think the Wolverines will play with a chip on their shoulder when they play the Spartans on March 7th, and I am looking forward to the game. I know some teams just get into bad shooting streaks, but I have a feeling they will get out of it for their final two games. Their defense needs to match up better, and their shot choices need to improve.

2 games are left in the season, and I believe they will dictate how next season will start. LETS GO BLUE!
